Motiving you to be Abundantly His

God’s Sense of Humor February 3, 2012

Don’t you love how God works? Most of the time I mean this with complete sincerity, today however I marvel at His creative genius. For weeks he had asked me to give up television and for weeks I ignored His plea. Until this past week when life was so busy that I didn’t have time to sit and watch a 30 minute comedy, let alone an hour long drama.

I thought to myself, so that is why You wanted me to say yes to the new task, so that I would say no to the one You had been begging me to give up. Usually it works the other way around. Typically God wants me to say yes in order to gain a new thing. Well as I am knee deep in the project He is showing me many things about His character. It is good to have my perspective renewed.

1. He is dependable. People will not always be around when you need them, but He is!

2. He is caring. When I am discouraged I can turn to His Word and have my spirit lifted.

3, He is not only able, He is willing to help things go smoothly, if I will obey.

4.He is here! In my present, He is here and He is near. When I call out He is here.

How about you today? What is God doing in your life?

A New Year! December 30, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — Emily Carter at Abundantly His @ 12:33 am

I love beginning a New Year. I think I love it because it is an opportunity to start with a clean slate. As I reflected on 2011, I was amazed at how good God has been to my family. A safe arrival of a new baby girl, older children staying healthy and doing wonderfully in school, and a husband who works hard to provide everything we need beyond just the physical.

Yes, God is good and his mercies are new every morning. (Lamentations 3:22-23) So, if 2011 was not the best year for you, be encouraged maybe 2012 will be better. Whatever the New Year holds for you and me, we have a God that loves us and wants the very, very best for us. Let’s start this year off right and spend some time in His word. I’m going to read the Bible thru this year. Want to join me? Check out New Life 91.9 for a reading schedule. http://www.newlife919.com/images/biblereading/NewLife-BRS-2012.pdf

See you in the New Year!

Stay in the Game December 1, 2011

This past Saturday, my team lost BIG! I mean big…42 to 14. But, you know what I’m still a huge fan. No matter how bad my Auburn Tigers might do in a game I will always remember, with fondness, the fall of my Senior Year at Auburn when they had the perfect season 11-0. Yes, 1993 was bittersweet as we were on probation and could not be watched on television or play in a bowl game. My mind is replaying my own college days right now. They were not all filled with all wins for me, there were a few monumental losses as well, but after my Bible Study today I couldn’t help but think God was for me all the way.

You see I was reading Job chapter one and answering a few of the questions from Beth Moore’s book When Godly People Do Ungodly Things. I realized that my husband and kids may think I’m great, but God is my #1 fan. All through this life when I have hit hard situations, temptations, trials, and errors God has been there rooting for me. As Beth said, “Yes, the battle is rough and sometimes seems unbearable, but God is always for us.” Maybe today the fight you are in seems more than you can handle, maybe it started as a game and now you are just knee-deep in something of your own choosing and you are looking for a way out, maybe you have been handed horrible and devastating circumstances, whatever it is know that the Lord God loves you and is on your side. He wants you to win this one for His glory! Hang in there dear one. Fight hard to the end. The Lord wants you to have victory in this battle, just remember He has already overcome death on our behalf.

John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” – Jesus

I Corinthians 15:57-58 ”But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” - the Apostle Paul

Say “Yes!” to God November 24, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — Emily Carter at Abundantly His @ 2:44 am

Has God ever asked you to take on a new project that you felt totally overwhelmed by? What was your response?

Recently this happened to me and my response was a fresh case of doubt. So I followed my usual pattern.

1. Pray

2. Search Scripture

3. Seek godly counsel

Well in this new endeavor, the Lord led me to two different sets of Scripture. One was about David and his group of mighty men and the second was from Jeremiah 32. Now these are not verses that I read every day, so it was interesting that they deal with a human king’s leadership and God’s sovereignty and His ability to tell us exactly what we are to do.

During this process I also asked Hayden, my husband, what he thought I should do. He said yes, go for it.

God gave me my answer through prayer, scripture and wise counsel. I answered Him with a yes, but added, “but I have three speaking engagements lined up so I’m not sure how this is all going to fit together.” Wouldn’t you know it, as I kept reading His word that particular day He gave me the outline to my first lesson, complete with illustrations.

The Lord is good and he is looking for people who will say “Yes, Lord! Walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and renown are the desire of our hearts.” (Is. 26:8) Not for our glory, but for His.

He knows what is on your full plate. He knows what needs to be done and you can trust Him with it all. So, if God is asking you to do something, just say YES!

Budgeting…YUCK! October 28, 2011

Have you ever noticed that your favorite store has a major sale at the very time that you are trying to save money? Or you have unexpected bills that hit at the same time as your child’s school’s fundraiser? Or a variety of other things that compete for your financial attention at the same time. This has recently been our family’s experience and it has left me with a few questions.

1. How do I become frugal, but not stingy.
2. How do I give generously, and yet not over spend?
3. Is there a balance and can it be achieved?

I believe the answer to question three is YES! But in order for it to happen, we must have a plan.

First, sit down with your spouse and agree on the amount you need to trim and from what area it is going to come from and what the money saved is going towards. Are you saving for Christmas, an upcoming expense, or do you simply trying to get things where they need to be? Don’t assume that the money can be trimmed from just one expenditure.  Here’s a few suggestions that might help.

1. Eat out less. The  kids might miss Chick-fil-a. But your family will eat healthier and enjoying more family time. It is important to reward yourself occasionally.  This will keep you from feeling like you have sacrificed everything, and therefore keep you from being frustrated and mad. Breakfast is typically less expensive than lunch or dinner, so why not try Saturday morning breakfast out and don’t be afraid to share!

2. Better meal planning. It is a little more work to make a menu and stick to it, but it causes me to use what I already have and utilize the sales flyers and coupons. It also has allowed us to discover new recipes made from a few left over ingredients. Such as Burrito Casserole from left over taco night. Place soft tortillas in a dish layer with rice or beans, taco meat, cheese and repeat. Freeze and save for another night or cook at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until heated through. Use your favorite toppings to dress it up.

Second, just go for it. Get serious about saving. This means stay out of the shops. If you are like me, you simply can’t go into a store without spending money. So I have found a different hobby to occupy my time. I needed to get better at keeping the house clean, so I’m trying to attack it. Operation Clean Up is allowing me to find treasures that we are not using and therefore can sale at a yard sale or on eBay or can donate to a charity. I can either boost my giving or my income. Either of these will allow me to be more generous without over spending.

Third, hold each other accountable. When we encourage each other to stick with the plan things go so much better.

Finally, celebrate. We get excited over a “Zero Spending Day”. This is where we don’t spend a dime. It is not always easy to do, but a couple of weeks ago we went for three days without spending anything, which was reason to celebrate.

Glory October 21, 2011

Are you giving God glory?

Psalm 19:1 “The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”

Step outside today and revel in the amazing handiwork of the Lord. The leaves are changing and painting a beautiful picture of God’s creativity. They tell a story of God’s ability to create unique things and his ability to bring about change.

He does this for each of us as well. We are all created differently, therefore we will have a different purpose, different opinions, and different ideas. That is a good thing! Imagine if we only got to eat one kind of ice cream for the rest of our lives. Chocolate may be my favorite, but it doesn’t go well with peach cobbler.

He also has the power to bring about change in our lives. Just as the leaves change colors from green to yellow, red or orange and then finally brown and fall to the ground to nourish the earth; we are to grow and transform and die to self. The result will be we nourish those around us. As we do this we bring glory to God.

How will your beautiful, unique self bring glory to God today? Will you declare it? Will you proclaim what He has done for you? Grab your Bible and read it, so that you may grow and nurture those around you.

Making Much of JESUS! September 18, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — Emily Carter at Abundantly His @ 2:42 am

This past weekend I had the privilege of attending the North Carolina Baptist Men’s Board Meeting.  You may be thinking, “What in the world? You are not a man!” You are correct. I was there to speak at the breakout session for the wives on Saturday. I am thrilled that they included me for the whole weekend. I cannot tell you how blessed I was, but I am about to try.

We began Friday night with worship. We asked God to open the eyes of our hearts and to help us see Him. Whenever you invite the Spirit of the Living God in be prepared! I listened to testimony after testimony of God’s provision, His faithfulness, and most of all His love. The NCBM Disaster Relief team leader shared about the out pouring of God’s love on the people of Eastern North Carolina as they were hit in April by tornadoes and most recently by hurricane Irene. Another gentleman told of a 33,000 lbs. of books and Bibles and other equipment that had recently arrived in Africa. He told of a young man for the first time had his own Bible. Another 33,000 lbs. is shipping out soon. These are just two of the powerful testimonies. I could go on about the hundreds of people who accepted Jesus as their Savior while on a NCBM job site or the young lady who answered the call to missions because of a trip to Haiti or about the work that North Carolina Baptist are doing in Guatemala, Cuba, Honduras, the Ukraine or other parts of the world. Over and over the same was said. God is at work and He allows us to be a part of it.

What a fabulous group of men and women who quite simply love Jesus and want to make much of Him. They are spreading His truth throughout my beloved state and across the world. To hear more about what they are doing, check out www.baptistsonmission.org.

Pure Speech! August 23, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — Emily Carter at Abundantly His @ 12:57 pm

We have standards for the type speech our kids use. Beyond just the normal words that you don’t want to hear from a six or eight year old, there are certain words that we just don’t say. That’s good right. Even though we have recently said good-bye to a television show that they enjoy because of the language and the disrespect that it shows to family and to God. It got me thinking about my own voice. Is it pleasing? Are the words of my mouth and the mediations of my heart pleasing? Do they encourage? Do I use a nice tone of voice? Yes with the rest of the world, but not always with my family. The ones I love most…I boss most. The ones who are most special to me…I yell at most. Does this make sense? It is probably because I spend the most time with them. Or because none of us enjoy cleaning the house, but it must be done. But is that really a good excuse? I don’t think so.

I want to teach them to be pure, therefore I should put no vile thing before me.

I want to teach them to be joyful, therefore I must be joyful.

I want to teach them thankfulness and godliness, therefore I must be thankful and godly.

But most of all I want to teach them to love, therefore…

I must be kind, not envious or boastful, nor proud. I must not be rude or self-seeking. I need to be calm and not easily angered (there’s enough of that in the world already). I need to be forgiving and not keep hold of wrongs that people commit against me or my family. I must delight in good not evil. I must rejoice in the truth. I must protect, trust and keep hope alive. Only Jesus can never fail in loving people. That doesn’t mean I shouldn’t try harder to be like Him. (Based upon I Corinthians 13:4-8).

I pray you will love your family more today and live to be Abundantly His!

Our Children August 13, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — Emily Carter at Abundantly His @ 8:54 pm

I’ve taken five months off from writing and speaking to have a baby and spend the summer just being mom. WOW! What a summer it has been. My oldest two children have been wonderful welcoming the newest addition to our family.

We spent last week at the beach with Hayden’s family. It was a wonderful trip. The house we stayed in was spacious. The kids loved that they could watch cartoons from any room, as each room had a television set in it. Coming home to our one t.v. with limited channels was disappointing. On Wednesday when the t.v. stopped working, they moved from disappointed to horrified. Afterall, they had to wait a full two days until we were going to have time to go and pick out another one. I realize that our kids live differently from many children in America. This observation took me back to Deuteronomy 6, where God commands us to teach our children his ways. In other words, we are to raise our children differently than the rest of the world. We are to:

1. teach them to love the Lord with all their hearts, soul, and strength. (6:4)

2. teach them to fear the Lord and serve Him only. (6:13)

3. teach them to not test the Lord. (6:16)

4. teach them to keep His commands.(6:17)

5. teach them to do what is right and good in the Lord’s eyes. (6:18)

6. teach them to obey the Lord. (6:24-25)

Christians should live differently than those who do not know the Lord. Our homes should be safe havens where lots of love and laughter prevail. Maybe we should throw out a few more televisions or at least turn them off for a while.

The Morning Routine March 8, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — Emily Carter at Abundantly His @ 1:23 pm

Every weekday morning is very similar.

  • Wake children up at seven, if they are not already awake
  • Fix breakfast for the kids
  • Make sure everyone is dress, combed, and brushed and out the door by eight.

This is an easy routine to keep until one or more parties decides to boycott the plan and play on the computer, watch tv, or just cause general mayhem. Today was one of those mornings. The children were in a silly, joyful mood which would usually be welcomed, except the Dad was trying to pay the bills and get some work done. We were all trying to cram two hours of activity into one hour.

Is that how we are with God? Do we try to pack in a true prayer time in three minutes as we are running to the next meeting, class, or activity? Do we read a short thought for the day instead of looking up verses in His Word?

There is nothing wrong with short prayers or thoughts for the day. When they become our steady diet, then we are sorely missing out on some vital nutrients.

Psalm 119:9-16 states, “How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Praise be to you, O LORD; teach me your decrees. With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth. I rejoice in following your statues as one rejoices in great riches. I mediate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.” (NIV)

I pray that you will carve out some time today for the Lord. I know your schedule is busy and overloaded with important things to do. But know that nothing will refresh, energize, or organize your day better than time well spent with God. Listen to a praise cd or Christian radio as you drive, turn off the news and read your Bible instead, or simply get in your prayer closet and lift up your day to the Lord. Then let someone know what a difference your step towards the Lord made in your day. Be Abundantly His!
