God’s Names of Deity

This week the ladies of Pitts Baptist Church, in Concord, NC have begun a new Bible Study called Knowing God by Name by Mary Kassian. This first week, we have studied the names of God which show His deity.

Yahweh or Jehovah – The LORD, Self-Existent One

Elohim – God Mighty, Strong, Prominent One

Adonai – Lord, Master

Rishon Va-Acharon – The first and last

Adonai Yahweh – Sovereign LORD

In Numbers 15:41, we read, the words Moses penned to the Israelites, “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt to be your God. I am the LORD your God.” What a powerful statement the LORD is making here. I, YAHWEH am your ELOHIM. Yahweh is the covenant name of God, it is His personal name which means “to be, is, was.” Past, present, and future this is who God is. Elohim is the most common name for “God” used in the Old Testament. No matter whether we call Him by His common or His most personal name He is God! There is none like HIM!

Examine your life today. Are you getting to know God personally or are you relying on a past relationship with Him? I challenge you to pick up a copy of Mary Kassian’s Knowing God by Name and go deeper into your relationship with the Lord. If you prefer more of a book form of study, instead of a true fill in the blank one, check out Kay Arthur’s Lord, I Want to Know You. I encourage you to spend some time today getting to know the LORD your God by name.
