God’s Sense of Humor

Don’t you love how God works? Most of the time I mean this with complete sincerity, today however I marvel at His creative genius. For weeks he had asked me to give up television and for weeks I ignored His plea. Until this past week when life was so busy that I didn’t have time to sit and watch a 30 minute comedy, let alone an hour long drama.

I thought to myself, so that is why You wanted me to say yes to the new task, so that I would say no to the one You had been begging me to give up. Usually it works the other way around. Typically God wants me to say yes in order to gain a new thing. Well as I am knee deep in the project He is showing me many things about His character. It is good to have my perspective renewed.

1. He is dependable. People will not always be around when you need them, but He is!

2. He is caring. When I am discouraged I can turn to His Word and have my spirit lifted.

3, He is not only able, He is willing to help things go smoothly, if I will obey.

4.He is here! In my present, He is here and He is near. When I call out He is here.

How about you today? What is God doing in your life?

I always say God has a sense of humor, especially how it applies to my children. Jimmy and I were hesitant to start a family as we enjoyed traveling, going out to dinner at 9 o’clock if we wanted and just being together. Everyone told us how much having a baby would change your life and frankly, we were fine as we were. It was a big step to make the decision that yes, we were ready to have a child. I know in the back of my mind I thought ‘how hard can it be?’ or ‘we can still do what we want to do’. God obviously had another plan entirely. Instead of blessing us with one son, we gave us two! And guess what? It wasn’t about me or Jimmy anymore. Our whole life changed and we had to make choices about what was really important. Where I once had a spotless house, now I’m lucky to really clean once a week! Our children are our pride and joy, but oh how God must smile on us some days!

Perspective…that’s a good topic on its own. Life is all about perspective. And choice – which leads me to the most overused phrase in my parenting career: You always have a choice, even if it’s a choice of attitude.

That phrase single-handily is my new mountain to climb and I kid that Christopher is watching me when I am down and telling me “you have a choice mom”. But I’m not really kidding. I believe we are all born with a God-given purpose (lessons to learn). So I suppose the answer to the question “What is God doing in your life” is giving me strength.
